February 2023 Newsletter

What a year 2022 was! As the world was opening up to levels close to a pre-pandemic state, BFB Foundation, in the early part of the year, started to outline our group trip back to Guatemala – the first in three years! Our board was finally able to return to this beautiful country, this time with a few new members, and had quite the reunion with our schools, staff, and students.

Through the support of our generous donors and sponsors, BFB Foundation’s efforts to provide scholarships to our students did not waver during the pandemic. We were proud to discuss the impact – and continuing efforts – with our schools and see firsthand, the impact our educational support has on our students and their families. Over walks through the school and a shared meal at our annual reunion, students from all over the region shared their stories. We were particularly fond of the ones of their remote learning capabilities during the height of the pandemic, as well as how letters from their US sponsors (from the ALL 4-1 program) are read to their loved ones as a family event. Time and distance did not separate our connection from the students.

We are pleased to announce our upcoming speaker event to be held in Central Piedmont’s New Theater in the Parr Building. As part of our Voices:Voces Speaker Series, we are excited to bring Danielle Feinberg to Charlotte on Saturday, April 1st!!

Danielle is Visual Effects Supervisor at Pixar Animation Studios & Mentor for Girls in STEM. Feinberg’s love of combining computers and art began when she was eight years old, and first programmed a Logo turtle to create images. This eventually led her to a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science from Harvard University. Now, in addition to her Pixar work, she works with teenage girls, encouraging them to pursue math and science.

Come, join us to hear how she brings animation to life through science!

ANNOUNCING: TOURING FOR GOOD

We are excited to introduce our newest program, a cultural and philanthropic travel experience, Touring for Good, that extends an opportunity for travelers to engage with and be a partner to the communities and programs committed to positive change in education for girls and women.

Travelers will enjoy the beautiful and scenic Guatemalan landscape, history and culture including Lake Atitlán, Chichicastenango and the cityscape of Antigua, where modern life is juxtaposed among ruins.  Shopping, visits with the schools we serve, and tours of historic sites and Mayan relics are included in the trip.

Our Tours are geared for the most enriching, cultural and personal experience we can pack into 7 nights and 8 days. The cost is $4,500 USD per person which includes all land transportation and tours, meals and accommodations.  Our intention for the tour is to support the high schools we will visit; 50% of your fee is a tax deductible donation and will be presented to the school during our visit there.

Join us to experience a rich and beautiful culture, steeped in antiquity – and a bright future that we will help to create together.
